Sights and tourist routes around Rimetea / Torockó

Torockó (Rimetea)

The most western village of Székelys* in Transylvania is the Hungarian-populated Torockó (Rimetea). Torockó is perhaps the most beautiful village of Transylvania, regarding to both its natural setting and its architecture. The main square of the village situated in the Torockó Basin, at the foot of the Székelykő mountain, recently gained Europa Nostra Award. The Unitarian church and most of the sights are there, but it is not an everyday sight the village itself, with its white painted small houses and with the dramatic towering stone called Székelykő.

Székelykő (Piatra Secuiului)

Székelykő ("Rock of the Székelys", in Romanian: Piatra Secuiului) is a barren hilltop located east of Torockó (Rimetea), part of the Mountains of Torockó, dominates the landscape and dramatically rises over the village.

Torockószentgyörgy (Colţeşti)

The settlement is 4 km away from Torockó (Rimetea), 575 m above sea level. It contains the ruins of the castle of the ancient famous family Thoroczkay. The castle was built by Illés Thorockay II, Transylvanian vice voivod in the 12th century, after the Castle Hill residents escaped from the Tartars thanks to a herioc team. The castle has an impressive location in a hilltop above the village, which itself is at the bottom of Ordaskő (1250 m). In 1704, the castle was destroyed by an Austrian general, but some of the walls and towers are still standing.

Valley of Aranyos (Valea Arieşului)

Going to Torockó (Rimetea) from Torda (Turda), our way brings in the Valley of Aranyos (Valea Arieş) to Borrév (Buru). But the River Aranyos (Raul Arieş) comes here from far away, from the Bihar Mountains (Munţii Bihorului), breaking through the mountains of the Transylvanian Basin, and then flows into the Maros (Mureş). Going further along the river valley we can meet a number of natural beauty, so if time permits, make there a worthwhile trip.

Turda Gorges

Turda Gorges (Hungarian: Tordai-hasadék, Romanian: Cheile Turzii) are one of the most beautiful tourist destinations of Transylvania, and are easily accessible from Torockó (Rimetea).

Torda (Turda)

Cca. 30 km away from Torockó (Rimetea) we can find the town of Torda (Turda), which has a rich history. Several (Hungarian) national assembly were held in this town, the most significant of them was held in 1568, which - for the first time in Europe - codified the religious freedom of the four Christian Churches: Catholic, Calvinist, Lutheran and Unitarian church (Edict of Torda).

A Torockói-hegységnek rengeteg nevezetessége van: szorosok, hasadékok, sziklacsúcsok, barlangok, búvópatakok, védett területek egyedi, sehol máshol meg nem található növényekkel. A Remetei szoros (Cheile Râmeţului) a hegység legzordabb, legnehezebben megközelíthető hasadékvölgye. Hossza meghaladja a két kilométert, meredek sziklafalainak magassága 150-200 m körüli. A szurdokvölgy bejárása kis vízállás esetén ajánlott, mivel több szakaszon vízben kell haladnunk.
